Reflections for Daily Prayer is a new series of daily readings aimed primarily at users of Common Worship: Daily Prayer and Time to Pray. Published quarterly to coincide with the Church year, the first issue ran from Advent to Epiphany (3 Dec 2007 - 2 Feb 2008), with this issue running through Lent to Pentecost; issue three covers Pentecost to Trinity 12 (12 May to 16 Aug 2008). The notes cover Monday to Saturday, omitting Sundays, hence the one day gap between issues. Each day's reading includes details of the lectionary for Morning Prayer, a reflection based upon one of those readings and either the Common Worship Collect of the Day or the additional collect. The contributors for this issue — Alan Bartlett, Lucy Winkett, Ally Barrett, David Runcorn, John Inge, Malcolm Guite and Liz Hoare — each approach their task from their own particular perspective: some are quietly meditative in tone, others more dynamic and challenging, but of those I've read none fail to offer something worthwhile, a succinct nugget of wisdom or insight to provide food for thought throughout the day. To summarise, these notes are, as advertised, an ideal companion for Daily Prayer. They are a stimulating alternative for anyone who may be tiring of the standard fare in daily reading notes, and, at only £3.99 for three months' readings, they represent excellent value for money.
